The greenstriped rockfish is one of the few species in this group with a piece of genuinely good news attached to it. When NOAA ran its Puget Sound rockfish status review in 2010, the review that resulted in bocaccio being listed as endangered and canary and yelloweye rockfish as threatened, the greenstriped rockfish was assessed and came out not at risk of extinction, along with the redstripe rockfish. That is a primary agency finding rather than an inference, and it is worth stating plainly on a page in a set where most of the entries end in an absence of data.
The caution sits alongside it. FishBase still rates the species very low resilience, with a population needing more than 14 years to double, and vulnerability to fishing at 63 out of 100, and the fish lives 54 years. There is no species-specific United States stock assessment; it is managed inside a rockfish complex. Being not at risk in Puget Sound in 2010 is not the same thing as being counted coastwide.

Greenstriped rockfish use both rocky and soft bottom, which puts them across a wider swath of seafloor than the strict reef species occupy, and it is part of why they turn up across such a long stretch of coast and in enclosed water like Puget Sound as well as on the open shelf.
The fish is slender with a relatively large head, and the markings are the identification and the name. The ground color is white to reddish, and 4 broken horizontal green stripes run the length of the body, 2 above the lateral line and 2 below. Horizontal stripes separate it cleanly from the vertical-banded pair on the chart, the flag and redbanded rockfish, and from the spotted and vermiculated pair, the greenspotted and greenblotched. Females grow larger than males. Maximum length is contested, given as 15 inches by FishBase and 19 by agency accounts, on a fish weighing about 1.4 pounds. As with every rockfish, the fin spines are sharp and carry mild venom.
What it eats has not been published. Its trophic level marks it as a carnivore and nothing further is established, so this entry does not list prey.

There is no established spearfishing for this species. It is legal in California inside the 10-fish rockfish bag with no size limit and no sub-limit, and spear divers are exempt from the season and depth restrictions, but the population sits between roughly 299 and 1,201 feet.
The fish has a secondary use that says something about how it is regarded: small greenstriped rockfish are valued as bait for lingcod, and larger ones are processed for human consumption or for fishmeal. That is a fish nobody is pursuing for its own sake. No spearfishing literature exists for it, no California angling record was located, and nobody has published a description of how it eats, so this entry leaves the table quality blank.
Deep Dive
William Ayres described the greenstriped rockfish in 1859, which puts it among the earliest named Pacific rockfish, ahead of most of the species on the identification chart. It has one of the longer coastal ranges in the genus, from the Gulf of Alaska to central Baja, across water that varies enormously in temperature and productivity.
That range is the interesting thing about the fish scientifically. Rockfish growth and longevity track their environment closely, and a species spread across 30 degrees of latitude is effectively running the same genome through a series of different experiments. A published study specifically examines variation in the age and growth of greenstriped rockfish from Washington to California. That paper was not read for this entry, so its findings are not stated here, but its existence is the relevant point: someone thought the coastwide variation in this species was worth a study of its own.
The Puget Sound result deserves its own paragraph, because it shows what a status review actually decides. In 2010 NOAA reviewed a set of Puget Sound rockfish and sorted them by extinction risk. Bocaccio came out at high risk and was listed as endangered. Canary and yelloweye rockfish came out at moderate risk and were listed as threatened, and the canary listing was later withdrawn in 2017. Greenstriped and redstripe rockfish came out not at risk and were not listed. That is 5 species, the same enclosed sea, the same review, and 3 different outcomes.
What separates them is mostly life history and depth. The species that got listed are the long-lived, late-maturing, deep-dwelling ones that had supported real fisheries. The greenstriped rockfish lives 54 years, which is long, but it occupies a broader range of bottom types, it is small enough at 15 to 19 inches that no directed fishery formed around it, and its largest commercial role is being cut up for lingcod bait. Sometimes the thing that saves a species is that nobody wanted it.
