About Pebbly Beach

Pebbly Beach is the working edge of Avalon, a 300-foot rocky stretch east of the ferry terminal hemmed in by the heliport, the desalination plant, the power station, and a boat ramp. The name fits the place. The beach is dark pebbles and rounded stones rather than sand, and the surroundings are industrial rather than recreational. Locals fish from the shore here, kayakers put in at the ramp, and the road from Avalon to the heliport runs right along the back of it.

The substrate is cobble and rock running into a shallow boulder bottom without kelp cover, which is a rocky reef biome. The same hard structure runs along the entire eastern Avalon shoreline.

Parking is available at the boat ramp lot. Pebbly Beach Road is open to walkers, bikes, and golf carts. Rod-and-reel fishing is legal under standard California regulations, but spearfishing is not, because City of Avalon Ordinance 303 prohibits spearfishing in city waters from Casino Point through Hamilton Cove.

Rocky Reef

The rocky reef biome is bare rock, boulder, and cobble structure without a kelp canopy above it. The hard relief and its crevices shelter invertebrates and reef fish, and the structure concentrates life that the surrounding sand cannot hold.
