Point Hudson

Point Hudson sits at the edge of downtown Port Townsend at the mouth of Admiralty Inlet, the funnel where the Strait of Juan de Fuca meets Puget Sound. The dive drops from a jetty and rock reef into water 45 to 75 feet deep along the featured route. A rebuilt breakwater completed in 2023 added a large new rock reef between the breakwater and the dolphin, expanding the underwater structure a diver can work.

Point Hudson Marina and RV Park is operated by the Port of Port Townsend at the end of Water Street. The Northwest Maritime Center sits at the marina, and Octopus Gardens Diving, based in the Boat Haven up the road, is the closest source of air and nitrox fills. The site's standout underwater feature is a formation of large plumose anemones that Puget Sound divers refer to as a cathedral.

Underwater structure at Point Hudson is essentially all rock, and the jetty and the new reef anchor a rocky reef biome that runs the length of the featured dive. Giant Pacific octopus have been documented in dens under log piles between 45 and 75 feet along the path from the T-Dock toward the log pile, and the octopus is protected from take under Washington regulation. Nudibranchs and plumose anemones are also documented residents on the reef. Scuba is the site's sole documented activity.

Parking is on the street along Water Street with a short walk to the water; the Northwest Maritime Center at the marina allows gear unloading, and the boat launch ramp is a much gentler entry than clambering over the jetty rocks. The north side of the jetty is the marina entrance channel and should not be crossed on entry or surfacing. Currents at Point Hudson are notoriously hard to predict, because the tidal basin of Port Townsend Bay distorts local flow and the nearest current-prediction station sits about half a mile away. Ebb tides turn the point into the fulcrum for water leaving the bay, and slack-tide diving is the standing recommendation; ferry wake and marina traffic are additional considerations. No marine protected area covers the site. Under WDFW Marine Area 6 rules, rockfish retention is prohibited and lingcod spearfishing is enforced within a May 21 through June 15 window.
