About Fletcher Cove Beach Park

Fletcher Cove Beach Park is the main public beach access in the city of Solana Beach in northern San Diego County, at the foot of Plaza Street where Lomas Santa Fe Boulevard meets the bluff edge. A small notch in the sandstone bluff gives the cove its sheltered shape. The Fletcher Cove Community Center sits on the bluff above the cove, and a lifeguard tower stands at the bluff edge. Tide Beach Park lies a half mile north along Solana Vista Drive at the intersection with Pacific Avenue. The Swami's State Marine Conservation Area boundary at the Solana Beach city line sits just north of Tide Beach Park, leaving Fletcher Cove Beach Park south of that boundary and outside the SMCA.

The bottom is sand at the cove with cobble patches at the tide line, and the named cove has no offshore reef or kelp structure of consequence, which puts the spot in a surf zone biome. Swimming and surfing draw the most use, and hook-and-line surf fishing from the cobble is common. With no rocky structure or kelp to hold fish, spearfishing, snorkeling, and scuba are uncommon.

A free public lot sits at 111 South Sierra Avenue, at the end of Plaza Street where Lomas Santa Fe Boulevard meets the bluff, and it fills on weekend mornings. Free street parking is available on the surrounding residential blocks. Fishing and spearfishing are legal here under standard California regulations.

Breakers on a sand shore — surf-zone biome

Biome

Surf Zone

The surf zone biome consists of sandy beaches and breaking waves. The action of surf disturbing the sand and kicking it up exposes marine invertebrates, buried in their shallow dens. This natural exposure of invertebrates attracts all kinds of fish, looking for an easy meal. Learn more about this biome and the species found in it by clicking the link below.
