About Wyckoff Ledge
Wyckoff Ledge is an underwater ridge on the south side of San Miguel Island, halfway between the sheltered cove at Tyler Bight on the west and the headland at Crook Point on the east. The ledge runs roughly parallel to the island shoreline, with a top at twenty feet and a vertical face dropping to seventy feet or more on the seaward side. Charter boats treat the ledge as the signature dive on San Miguel. The ledge and its gullies are dense with life: large lingcod hold on the deeper ledges, kelp covers the shallower top of the structure, and octopus and wolf eels live in the cracks.
The dive carries San Miguel's reputation for both quality and difficulty. The island sits in the colder, more exposed western end of the Channel Islands chain, and the water around it is consistently the clearest in the park, with visibility regularly running fifty to a hundred feet on the south side. The cost is the weather. San Miguel takes the full northwest wind and swell, and Wyckoff sits on the south face with no land between it and the open Pacific to the south. The dive turns surgy and unworkable on any moderate swell from either direction.
The vertical relief of the ledge face itself, dropping from twenty feet at the top to over seventy at the base, makes Wyckoff Ledge a canyon biome. Giant kelp anchored on the top of the ledge, growing up through the water column to the surface, adds a kelp forest biome. A rocky reef biome holds the ledge face and the gullies cut into it, with the cracks and ledges that shelter the wolf eels and octopus. The open water above and seaward of the ledge makes a pelagic biome, where larger pelagic species transit and the bottom falls away.
Access is boat only. Charter dive boats run to Wyckoff Ledge from Santa Barbara, with the crossing typically a four to five hour run on a multi-day trip. Day trips from Ventura are uncommon because of the distance. San Miguel Island is owned by the U.S. Navy, and the National Park Service requires a signed access permit and liability waiver for any landing, with rangers escorting all visitors on land. The water around the island is open to recreational use, but the closest landing is at Cuyler Harbor several miles to the north.
Fishing and spearfishing are legal here under standard California recreational rules. The site sits east of the Judith Rock State Marine Reserve, which protects the waters west of 120°26.6′ W around Judith Rock and Castle Rock. Wyckoff at 120°23.3′ W is well east of that boundary, and the dive community treats the ledge as open to take. Divers running west from Wyckoff toward Tyler Bight should chartplot the Judith Rock boundary before harvesting, since the eastern extent of the reserve is implied from the boundary vertices and the named rocks rather than a single documented eastern line.
Rainbarrel is a broad south-shore rocky shelf with dense kelp between Tyler Bight and Wyckoff Ledge, set on the same protected south face of San Miguel Island. The shelf was historically one of the densest abalone grounds on the island before the statewide recreational abalone closure, and the kelp and reef structure remain. The site sits east of the Judith Rock State Marine Reserve in open water, under standard California recreational rules.

Canyon
