Von Helm Rock

Von Helm Rock is a group of sharp offshore pinnacles about a mile off the coast south of Cambria, roughly 18 miles northwest of Morro Bay Harbor and reachable only by boat. NOAA charts the shallowest point over the rock at 13 feet, and the dive guides that worked the site describe 2 or 3 separate spires with tops around 20 to 25 feet and walls dropping past 100 feet, with 120 feet reached on the outer faces. Those faces are close to vertical on most sides. One of the spires holds a large ship's anchor with heavy chain still attached to it. The rock is sharp, and it breaks only in the roughest weather.

Hard rock rising from a floor past 100 feet to spires within 25 feet of the surface, cut with crevices and crusted in plumose anemones and scallops, is the pinnacles biome. A patch of kelp anchors on the shallow tops and stands clear of the inshore beds, adding a kelp forest biome that doubles as the surface mark for finding the structure. Around and above the spires runs open water that larger fish and seasonal pelagic species travel through, a pelagic biome.

Scuba, spearfishing and underwater photography all draw traffic here, though the run up the coast keeps the numbers low. Most diving happens at 60 feet or shallower, where the growth is thickest. The vertical walls ask for settled buoyancy, and current can run hard when swell and a large tide arrive together. Visibility is the site's reputation on the central coast, and days near 95 feet have been reported at the rock.

The White Rock (Cambria) State Marine Conservation Area prohibits all take of living marine resources, and its western boundary runs about a third of a mile east of Von Helm Rock. The rock itself lies outside that area, so hook-and-line fishing and spearfishing are legal here under standard California regulations. The margin is thin enough to be worth plotting before the anchor goes down.
