Black Cavern

Black Cavern is a submerged cavern on the west side of Santa Barbara Island, offshore of Webster Point between the rocks known as the Three Sisters and the point itself. The cavern opening sits at about ninety to a hundred feet, and the structure runs back into the rock with the dive working a depth band of roughly sixty to a hundred and twenty feet. The site takes its name from the dark interior of the cavern, where the light falls off quickly past the entrance.

Black Cavern is an advanced dive. The depth, the overhead structure of the cavern, and the exposure of the west side of Santa Barbara Island put it beyond recreational limits in places and call for divers trained and equipped for cavern and deep work. Santa Barbara Island sits thirty-eight miles off the mainland in open ocean, and the west side holds clear, cold water when the weather allows a crossing.

The cavern itself, the overhead chamber and the vertical rock that frames the entrance, makes Black Cavern a canyon biome. The rock of the cavern walls and the surrounding reef, with the cracks and ledges that hold larger fish, holds a rocky reef biome. Giant kelp anchors on the shallower reef around the site where it can reach the light, adding a kelp forest biome above the deeper structure.

Access is boat only. Charter dive boats run to Santa Barbara Island from San Pedro and Long Beach in the south and Ventura in the north, with the crossing three to four hours under power and most divers visiting on multi-day trips. The listed position is a reference waypoint for the west-side cavern rather than an exact pin, and the overhead environment means the site is for experienced, appropriately trained divers only.

Fishing and spearfishing are legal here under standard California recreational rules. The Santa Barbara Island State Marine Reserve covers the southeastern side of the island, and Black Cavern on the west side lies outside the reserve. Divers crossing toward the southeast face should chartplot the boundary before harvesting.
