About Deception Pass
Deception Pass is the narrow tidal channel between Fidalgo and Whidbey islands, crossed by the 1935 Deception Pass Bridge and shared as the boundary between Skagit and Island counties. The pass is the exchange point between Skagit Bay to the east and the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the west, and the entire tidal prism between those 2 water bodies funnels through the gap under the bridge. Underwater, the channel is steep walls, kelp forests, and caves and canyons dressed in anemones and sponges, with the NOAA current station in the narrows sitting at 67 feet. The 2 shore entries the dive community uses for the pass proper are North Beach on the Fidalgo side and Bowman Bay for a Rosario-side approach.
