About Blue Cavern Point

Blue Cavern Point is the headland just east of Isthmus Cove at Two Harbors, and the dive site that gives the surrounding marine protected area its name. The rock face at the point drops vertically from about 30 feet past 80 feet, with a wide arch cut through it around the 40-foot mark. The arch and the recess behind it form the namesake cavern. Above the dropoff, the kelp canopy has stayed thick across the shallow shelf, anchored to the rock and reaching the surface, because the surrounding SMCA has been no-take since 2012.

The shallow shelf with its kelp canopy is a kelp forest biome. The vertical dropoff with the cavern, ledges, and overhangs is canyon structure, the sharp depth change rather than horizontal hard-bottom that defines that biome.

Access is boat-only. Charters run out of Two Harbors about ten minutes from the cove, and Avalon and mainland boats also work the site. Take is prohibited within Blue Cavern Onshore SMCA, which covers the dropoff and the cavern.

Biome

Kelp Forest

The kelp forest biome is giant kelp anchored to rocky bottom and growing up through the water column. The canopy and stipes form a three-dimensional habitat that shelters fish, invertebrates, and the predators that hunt them. Sub-biome

Canyon

The canyon biome is sharp vertical relief with a real depth change — walls, pinnacles, and drop-offs. The structure draws current-borne food and concentrates fish and large predators along its edges. Learn more about this biome and the species found in it by clicking the link below.
