About Swami's Beach
Swami's Beach is a sandstone reef point at the south end of Encinitas, in northern San Diego County. The beach takes its name from the Self-Realization Fellowship ashram on the bluff above, founded by Swami Paramahansa Yogananda in 1937. A long stairway descends from the bluff to the sand below the point, where the reef extends offshore and produces the surf break that gave the spot its international surf reputation. The site sits inside Swami's State Marine Conservation Area, which runs from Cottonwood Creek north of the point south to the Solana Beach city line and three miles offshore. Adjacent beaches inside the SMCA include Pipes immediately south of the point and the wider Encinitas beach access at D Street to the north.
The point is sandstone reef with submerged rocks just offshore that build the surf break, and beyond them giant kelp anchors on the rocky bottom and grows up through the water column to the surface. The bare sandstone and submerged rocks at the point make this a rocky reef biome. Past them, the kelp offshore extends the spot into a kelp forest biome reachable from the same beach entry.
Surfing carries most of the use because the reef produces a powerful, well-shaped wave, and the reef break also keeps casual swimming inside the surf zone uncommon. Hook-and-line fishing from shore is common and allowed under the SMCA rules. Snorkeling and scuba are occasional, constrained by surf conditions and the no-take rule on most species, and spearfishing for Pacific bonito and white seabass happens under the SMCA pelagic-take exception.
A small free lot sits at the top of the bluff at the foot of K Street, with street parking on First Street. Spaces fill at dawn on weekends because the surf break is one of the most popular in San Diego County. Take of all living marine resources is prohibited within Swami's State Marine Conservation Area under California Code of Regulations Title 14, with two narrow exceptions: recreational hook-and-line fishing from shore, and recreational spearfishing for pelagic finfish including Pacific bonito and white seabass.

Rocky Reef
The sandstone reef and submerged rocks at the point are a rocky reef biome. The structure produces the surf break and holds the kelp-and-reef species of the North County coast.

Kelp Forest
Giant kelp anchored on rocky bottom offshore of the point forms a kelp forest biome, reachable from the same beach entry. The canopy shelters the reef fish and the spear-legal pelagics that transit the SMCA.
