The Report covers 8 California regions, from San Luis Obispo County south to San Diego, plus Channel Islands National Park and Catalina Island. Along the mainland, long sand beaches with no rocky structure or kelp see little diving, and the shore dives center on rock and kelp: Leo Carrillo State Beach and the Palos Verdes coves in Los Angeles County, Little Corona del Mar Beach and Crystal Cove in Orange County, and Refugio State Beach on the Gaviota coast of Santa Barbara County.
The islands are a different trip. Every spot in Channel Islands National Park is reached by boat or by Island Packers ferry from Ventura. On Catalina, Casino Point Dive Park in Avalon is a shore dive, sheltered from open-coast surge by the shape of Avalon Bay.
The mainland and the islands see very different visibility. La Jolla Cove usually runs 10 to 20 feet and can drop to 5 during plankton blooms or after rain, and Malaga Cove in Los Angeles County averages 10 to 15. Offshore, Lovers Cove on Catalina usually runs 30 to 50 feet, Casino Point regularly runs 40 to 100, and the Coronado Islands off San Diego average near 50.
