About Mussel Shoals Beach

Mussel Shoals Beach is a narrow shoreline in the small Mussel Shoals neighborhood off Highway 101, about a half mile south of Rincon Point. Houses line the inland side, and rocky embankments break up the sand in places. The artificial Rincon Island oil platform sits approximately 3,000 feet offshore, connected to the mainland by a pier known as Richfield Pier at the south end of the beach. Public access to the island, the pier, and the original well infrastructure is closed, but the offshore structure shapes the marine community at the beach. In 1961, an artificial reef was constructed on the seaward side of the island by sinking 120 old automobile bodies tied in bundles of five from barges. Before the island and the reef, a biologist at Moorpark College recorded 14 marine species at Mussel Shoals; after construction, the count rose to approximately 298 species. Mussel Shoals Beach is known among Ventura divers as a shore-dive option oriented toward the offshore structure.

The sand and cobble bottom with breaking waves at entry is a surf zone biome. At the south end the cobble shoreline gives way to bare rock and patches of natural reef, and combined with the artificial reef around the island, that puts a rocky reef biome within reach of the spot.

Surfing is common along the open beach, and shore fishing produces surfperch. Scuba and spearfishing are reported at the beach by divers working out toward the Rincon Island structure on calm days. The surf and the distance to the offshore reef keep snorkeling uncommon.

Free public street parking is available along Ocean Avenue and the short side streets in the Mussel Shoals neighborhood. There is no dedicated lot, no fees, and no facilities at the beach, and spaces fill on summer weekends and at low tide. Fishing and spearfishing are legal here under standard California regulations. Rincon Island and Richfield Pier remain closed to the public.

Biome

Surf Zone

The surf zone biome consists of sandy beaches and breaking waves. The action of surf disturbing the sand and kicking it up exposes marine invertebrates, buried in their shallow dens. This natural exposure of invertebrates attracts all kinds of fish, looking for an easy meal. Learn more about this biome and the species found in it by clicking the link below.

Sub-biome

Rocky Reef

The rocky reef biome is bare rock, boulder, and cobble structure without a kelp canopy above it. The hard relief and its crevices shelter invertebrates and reef fish, and the structure concentrates life that the surrounding sand cannot hold.
