About Laguna — Main Beach

Laguna - Main Beach is the central public beach in downtown Laguna Beach, Orange County, at the foot of Broadway and Ocean Avenue. The center of the beach is sand, with rocky outcrops framing both ends. A lifeguard tower has stood on the sand since 1937 and is a recognized local landmark. Volleyball courts sit on the sand, basketball courts run along the boardwalk at the north end, and the grassy upland of Main Beach Park opens up at the south end. Heisler Park climbs the bluff to the north and continues along the coast above a series of small pocket beaches. The Laguna Art Museum stands one block inland on Cliff Drive at South Coast Highway. The whole beach falls inside the Laguna Beach State Marine Reserve, which runs from roughly 33.5119 N north to 33.5537 N and out three nautical miles. Laguna - Main Beach at 33.5427 N sits well within the reserve.

The center of the beach is sand with breaking surf, while the rocky outcrops at either end carry submerged shallow reef just offshore, and giant kelp anchors on rocky bottom further out inside the reserve. That central sand entry makes the spot a surf zone biome on first wade-in. The submerged rocks at either end and the offshore reef inside the reserve add a rocky reef biome within a short swim of the central beach.

Swimming and surfing carry the use on the central sand. The rocky ends draw snorkeling, scuba, and wildlife viewing, with the reserve's no-take protections producing dense fish populations along the reef. Spearfishing and hook-and-line fishing are both prohibited within the reserve.

Metered street parking on South Coast Highway and along Cliff Drive runs $1 to $2 per hour, and several paid municipal lots sit within walking distance of the beach. Free residential street parking is difficult to come by in summer. Under California Code of Regulations Title 14, the Laguna Beach State Marine Reserve is no-take: all take of living, geological, and cultural marine resources is prohibited.

Biome

Surf Zone

The surf zone biome consists of sandy beaches and breaking waves. The action of surf disturbing the sand and kicking it up exposes marine invertebrates, buried in their shallow dens. This natural exposure of invertebrates attracts all kinds of fish, looking for an easy meal. Learn more about this biome and the species found in it by clicking the link below.

Sub-biome

Rocky Reef

The rocky reef biome is bare rock, boulder, and cobble structure without a kelp canopy above it. The hard relief and its crevices shelter invertebrates and reef fish, and the structure concentrates life that the surrounding sand cannot hold.
