The widow rockfish is the biggest fishery of any species in this group and one of the least likely for a diver to meet. Commercial boats landed about 21 million pounds of it in 2024, worth $5.2 million, nearly all by midwater trawl. That is roughly 13 times the bocaccio landings and 3.5 times the yellowtail landings from the same year. The stock was overfished historically and was declared rebuilt in 2011, and on 2022 catch data it is neither overfished nor subject to overfishing.
The number worth pausing on is not the tonnage. FishBase rates this species very low resilience, with a population that would need more than 14 years to double and a high vulnerability score of 65 out of 100. That is the worst rating of any rockfish researched for this batch, worse than bocaccio, worse than canary, worse than the small deep-reef species. A fish with that profile supporting a 21-million-pound fishery is a fish whose management is doing real work.
Abundance runs from British Columbia to northern California and drops off toward the south. The schools hold between 80 and 1,200 feet, in midwater above rock. There is no version of a normal dive that intersects that.

Location
Widow rockfish live from Albatross Bank in the Gulf of Alaska south to Todos Santos Bay in Baja California, and they are free-swimming midwater fish rather than bottom sitters. Both juveniles and adults form large schools, holding above jagged rock and cobblestone bottom, and it is the schooling that made the species a trawl fishery in the first place.
The fish is brassy brown with a lighter belly often washed with red, on an elongate, side-compressed body about a third as deep as it is long. The mark to know is the fin membranes: the webbing between the rays, especially in the anal and pectoral fins, is black. Fish under 10 inches carry orange streaks that adults lose. The mouth is small for a rockfish, with the lower jaw projecting slightly. It reaches 24 inches. As with every rockfish, the fin spines are sharp and carry mild venom.
Diet follows size. Juveniles eat krill and copepods; older fish take juvenile crabs, amphipods, krill and small fish. Unusually for the species in this group, the widow rockfish has a documented predator list: chinook salmon and northern fur seals both eat them.
Spearfishing Brief
There is no practical spearfishing for this species and no literature describing any. Widow rockfish are legal in California inside the 10-fish rockfish bag with no sub-limit and no size limit, and spear divers are exempt from the season and depth rules, but the schools hold between 80 and 1,200 feet in open midwater and southern California holds very few of them to begin with.
The theoretical encounter is at the shallow end of that range, on a deep dive over rock in central or northern California, with a school hanging off the structure. That is a midwater shot at a moving fish in a school, which is the same problem yellowtail and black rockfish present and would want a full-length midwater gun rather than a reef gun. Nobody has written up doing it, so the description above is inference from documented behavior rather than a technique.
Deep Dive
David Starr Jordan and Charles Henry Gilbert described the widow rockfish in 1880, and gave it a name that describes something no angler ever sees. The species epithet joins the Greek for within and the Greek for black, and it refers to the peritoneum, the lining of the body cavity, which in this fish is jet black. It is a naming convention from an era when species were separated on dissection tables rather than in the water, and it is a small reminder that a great many rockfish characters exist inside the fish rather than on it.
The demographics are contested in a way worth spelling out, because 3 reputable sources give 3 answers. On maximum age, NOAA and FishBase agree at 60 years, with NOAA adding that fish older than 20 are uncommon, while a widely mirrored secondary account gives 16 years. Sixteen is far enough outside the other 2 to be treated as an error. On maturity, NOAA puts it around 8 years or 16.5 inches, another account puts it at 4 years and 12.75 inches, and FishBase puts it at about 14 inches. This entry reports NOAA's figures and names the disagreement rather than splitting the difference, because averaging contradictory sources produces a number that no source supports.
What is not in dispute is the reproductive arithmetic, and it explains the resilience rating. A female of 12.75 inches carries about 95,000 eggs. A female of 20 inches carries roughly 1,100,000. That is a more than tenfold increase across 7 inches of growth, and it means the large old females are not simply bigger contributors but overwhelmingly the productive part of the population. Birth happens in a tight window, in January or February. A fishery that takes the big fish takes most of the reproduction with them, which is the mechanism behind every rockfish rebuilding plan on this coast.
The recovery itself took until 2011. What made it possible was the same thing that made the collapse possible: widow rockfish school, densely, in midwater over known structure. A schooling fish is efficient to catch and equally efficient to leave alone once catch limits, gear rules and a catch-share program are pointed at it. Midwater trawl gear, which is what takes almost the entire commercial catch, works in the water column rather than on the seafloor, so the fishery has a light bottom footprint even at 21 million pounds.
On the plate it is a solid commercial fish rather than a prize. The body is slim and compressed with a small head and modest spines, so the cut is easier than a deep-bodied reef rockfish, and the fillet that comes off is thinner for the length. Beyond that nobody has published a careful account of its texture, fat, or any traditional preparation, so this entry leaves those blank. California law requires the skin to be left attached to any rockfish fillet at sea, so the species can still be identified on the water.
