The bocaccio carries 3 different conservation verdicts at once, and all of them are current on paper. The IUCN lists it Critically Endangered, from an assessment made in August 1996 that has never been revisited. NOAA declared the southern Pacific coast stock rebuilt in 2017, and on 2022 catch data it is neither overfished nor subject to overfishing. Meanwhile the population in Puget Sound and the Georgia Basin is listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, and a review completed in 2024 concluded that the protection should stay in place.
Those are not contradictions so much as 3 answers to 3 different questions. The IUCN listing dates from the bottom of a genuine collapse and is now 30 years stale. The NOAA determination is recent and applies to one managed stock on the US West Coast. The Endangered Species Act listing covers a separate inland population that has not recovered with the coastal one. The northern Pacific coast and Gulf of Alaska stocks have no verdict at all, because nobody has assessed them.
For a diver the practical picture is simpler. Adults live between 130 and 980 feet and are not part of anyone's dive. Juveniles settle into shallow rocky bottom and kelp forest before moving offshore, and that is the fish a southern California diver actually sees: a slim, big-mouthed young rockfish hanging in the kelp, nothing like the 3-foot animal it becomes.

A large, deep-bodied fish with a big frame and a good yield. The head spines are the only real obstacle, and at 2 to 3 feet the fillets come off easily.
Location
Bocaccio run from Stepovak Bay on the Alaska Peninsula south to Punta Blanca in Baja California, with the abundance concentrated between Oregon and northern Baja. Adults hold over rocky reef and open bottom between 130 and 980 feet, with records past 1,500, and they use coral and sponge reef as well as rock. The young are pelagic first, then settle into nearshore nurseries in rock and kelp, then move deeper as they grow.
The fish is easy to tell from every other rockfish on the identification chart because it is not built like one. Where most rockfish are deep-bodied and compact, the bocaccio is long and slim with a very large mouth and a jaw that extends well past the eye. Color runs olive to burnt orange over a pink or red belly. It reaches 3 feet and 21 pounds, which makes it one of the largest rockfish on the coast, and it lives up to 50 years. As with every rockfish, the fin spines are sharp and carry mild venom.
That mouth is doing what it looks like it is doing. Adult bocaccio eat mostly fish, and they prefer other rockfish, along with sablefish, anchovies and squid. Larvae start on copepods and are eating small fish before their first year is out.
Spearfishing Brief
There is no real spearfishing case for this species, and the entry should say so rather than dress one up. Adults live between 130 and 980 feet. Nobody is diving that. The California bag treats bocaccio as an ordinary member of the 10-fish rockfish limit, and the current CDFW page carries no sub-limit for it, though the state has imposed one in past seasons and it is worth rechecking before a trip.
What a diver does encounter is the juvenile stage in kelp and shallow rock, mostly in southern California. Those fish are small, they are the recruitment that rebuilt the stock, and 3 separate management bodies are still arguing about the population they belong to. Taking them is legal. Leaving them is better, and this entry recommends it plainly.
If an adult is ever encountered at the shallow end, it behaves like the large mobile predator it is rather than like a hole-sitting reef rockfish, and it would need a midwater gun rather than a short reef gun. That is a hypothetical, not a technique, and no spearfishing literature exists for the species.
Deep Dive
The bocaccio is the rockfish that taught the West Coast what a rockfish collapse looks like. William Ayres described it in 1854, and for most of the 20th century it was one of the mainstays of the California groundfish fishery, big, abundant, and easy to catch in quantity. Then the stock went down, and by 1996 the IUCN had it as Critically Endangered. What followed was one of the longer rebuilding programs in US fishery management, and in 2017 NOAA declared the southern Pacific coast stock rebuilt. In 2024 commercial boats landed 1.6 million pounds worth about $950,000, and recreational anglers took another 390,000 pounds.
The recovery ran on a biology that cuts both ways. A female bocaccio spawns 1 to 3 times in a season and carries between 290,000 and 1.9 million eggs, which is an enormous reproductive capacity, and it is why a single strong year class can move the whole stock. But the fish matures between 4 and 7 years and lives to 50, and rebuilding a population of long-lived animals means waiting for good years that arrive when the ocean decides rather than when managers do. FishBase rates the species low resilience, with a population that needs somewhere between 4.5 and 14 years to double under the best conditions.
The 3 conservation verdicts on this fish are worth sitting with, because they are a lesson in reading status labels rather than a puzzle to solve. An IUCN listing is a global assessment made on a date, and this one was made in 1996 and never updated, so it describes the fish of 30 years ago. A NOAA rebuilt determination is a legal finding about one managed stock against a rebuilding target, and it says nothing about Alaska or about Puget Sound. An Endangered Species Act listing covers a distinct population segment, and the Puget Sound and Georgia Basin bocaccio are genetically and geographically separate from the coastal fish. Anyone who cites just one of the 3 is telling the truth and giving the wrong impression.
The kelp connection is the part that matters most for this site. Bocaccio do not spend their whole lives at 500 feet. The young settle into shallow rocky habitat and kelp forest, and the health of that nursery is part of what determines whether a year class survives to join the offshore population. It is the same story the kelp forest tells for a dozen other species, and it is the reason a fish nobody dives on still belongs in an encyclopedia written for divers.
On the plate the bocaccio is excellent and always has been, which is why the fishery grew the way it did. It is a big fish with a big frame and a generous yield, and the fillets come off a 2-foot animal without difficulty. Beyond that, nobody has published a careful account of its texture or fat or any traditional preparation specific to the species, so this entry leaves those fields blank rather than borrowing them from the family. California law requires the skin to be left attached to any rockfish fillet at sea, so the species can still be identified on the water.
