The Spanish shawl is the most photographed animal on this coast that nobody eats. It is common through a range running from British Columbia to Baja California Sur, including the Gulf of California and the Galapagos, and California records name Santa Catalina Island, the Palos Verdes Peninsula and San Diego, all inside this site's water. It lives from the intertidal down to about 131 feet, so it turns up in tidepools and on deep reef alike.

There is no fishery and no reason for one. The animal is under 3 inches long and nobody harvests it, so it sits under the general California invertebrate limit of 35 of any one species per day, with take of all invertebrates prohibited inside state marine reserves and restricted in state marine parks and conservation areas. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has never assessed it.

Spanish shawls live where their food lives, which means rock with hydroids and small anemones growing on it. Hydroids are colonial relatives of jellyfish that grow as fine branching tufts, easy to mistake for algae, and they coat rock, kelp holdfasts and pier pilings across the whole coast. A diver looking for a Spanish shawl should be looking at that fuzz rather than scanning open rock.

The animal grows to about 2.8 inches, which is large for a nudibranch on this coast and still small enough to miss. The body is purple. The back carries dozens of finger-like projections, orange and standing upright, and on the head there is a pair of scarlet sensory tentacles. Nothing else in California looks like it.

Those orange projections are called cerata, and they do 3 jobs at once. They are the animal's gills, pulling oxygen straight out of the water. They are extensions of the gut, so digestion happens partly inside them. And they are the storage and delivery system for the animal's defense, which is the part worth its own section.

Deep Dive

A nudibranch is a sea slug that has given up its shell. That trade buys mobility and costs the animal every bit of armor it had, so the group has spent its evolutionary history inventing replacements, and the aeolids arrived at the boldest one: steal the weapon from the food.

Hydroids and anemones are cnidarians, and every cnidarian is armed with nematocysts, microscopic stinging capsules that fire on contact. That is what makes a jellyfish sting and what a hydroid uses to catch prey. An aeolid nudibranch eats those animals, and rather than digesting the stinging cells along with everything else, it moves them intact through its gut and out into the tips of the cerata on its back, where they are stored and can be used against whatever attacks the slug. The nudibranch is not immune to a weapon it cannot make. It is a thief carrying someone else's ammunition.

The orange color of the cerata does the advertising. Bright coloration on an animal that is slow, soft and completely defenseless in appearance is usually a warning, and here the warning is honest: the bright orange sits on exactly the structures holding the stolen stinging cells. It is worth being precise about how far this specific claim goes. The nematocyst theft is documented for aeolid nudibranchs as a group, and the storage in the cerata is documented for this species. Whether the stolen cells remain fully functional in this particular animal was not confirmed by anything read for this page.

The color itself is the other trick, and it is chemically strange. The purple body, the scarlet head tentacles and the orange cerata are all produced by 1 pigment, a carotenoid called astaxanthin, appearing in 3 different modified states. Three colors, one chemical. Astaxanthin is the same family of compound that turns salmon flesh pink and shrimp shells red when cooked, which gives some sense of how ordinary the raw material is and how much the animal is doing with it.

Spanish shawls can swim, and this is what divers remember about them. Threatened by a predator, the animal flexes its whole body hard, pushes off the rock and moves out into open water, flaring as it goes. It is an escape response rather than a way of getting around, and a nudibranch under no pressure crawls like any other slug. The sight of one doing it is the reason the common name refers to a dancer's shawl.

Reproduction has an efficient arrangement and one limit. Every Spanish shawl is a hermaphrodite carrying both male and female organs, which means any 2 individuals that meet can mate, a real advantage for a slow animal scattered thinly across a reef. Self-fertilization is recorded as rare, so a partner is still necessary. What happens after that is not something this page can describe: no egg mass account, no larval duration and no lifespan for the species turned up in anything read.
