The sunset rockfish is the newest species on the California rockfish chart and the hardest one for a diver to claim having seen. It was described in 2008, and before that every one ever caught was recorded as a vermilion rockfish. It still is. California's catch statistics do not separate them, the federal stock assessment treats them as a single combined stock, and the assessment states plainly that the 2 fish cannot be reliably distinguished in catches.

There is no IUCN evaluation, and FishBase carries no public page for the species at all, which is unusual enough to be worth noting on a page like this. The only status figure that exists is a shared one: north of Point Conception, the combined vermilion-and-sunset stock stood at 43 percent of unfished spawning output in 2021, just above its target. That number describes both fish at once and cannot be split.

Abundance is real. The majority of the population sits south of Point Conception, on deep rock, and in a 2014 Southern California survey the sunset group outnumbered vermilion in the catch. What makes it rare in any sense a diver cares about is depth plus doubt: the adults live below diving range, and a fish brought up from the reachable edge of that range cannot be assigned to either species without a lab.

Sunset rockfish are reported from Point Arena south into Baja California, with the population concentrated south of Point Conception. They hold on deep rock and offshore banks. The original 2008 description put them mainly between 100 and 200 meters, roughly 330 to 660 feet, with very few shallower than 330 and a sharp separation from vermilion rockfish at that line.

Later work found the line blurrier. A 2014 hook-and-line survey across 106 sites in the Southern California Bight recorded sunset rockfish down to 211 meters, about 692 feet, at an average depth of 131 meters, about 430 feet, and found 29 percent of the catch shallower than 330 feet. Complete separation from vermilion rockfish only happened below about 436 feet. Everything above that is mixed water.

The fish itself is squat and blocky, a little over a third as deep as it is long, yellowish orange with mottling over the upper back and darker red fins, with a medium head, relatively small eyes and a small terminal mouth. Those characters come from descriptive accounts rather than from a field key, and the distinction matters: when researchers measured 6 morphological features across both species, 3 differed, and none of the 3 could be used to tell a fish apart on a boat. As with every rockfish, the fin spines are sharp and carry mild venom.

The size picture contains a trap worth walking through carefully, because the 2 true statements about it sound like a contradiction. Averaged across all depths, sunset rockfish are significantly larger and heavier than vermilion. Compared at the same shallow depths, they are significantly smaller: vermilion averaged 5.6 centimeters longer in water shallower than 330 feet and 8 centimeters longer above 260 feet. Both are correct. Sunset rockfish are bigger on average because they live deep, where the big fish are, and the ones that turn up shallow are mostly juveniles and subadults averaging under 13 inches. A diver in reachable water is meeting the small end of the species, not a representative one.

Spearfishing Brief

The honest brief is that this is a fish a diver takes without knowing it. Sunset rockfish are legal in California, and they share a sub-limit with vermilion rockfish: 4 per person in the Northern Management Area, 2 elsewhere, inside the 10-fish rockfish bag. That shared limit binds divers even though divers are exempt from the season and depth rules the boats follow.

That sub-limit is the practical takeaway, and it is the reason this page exists rather than being folded into the vermilion entry. A diver working deep rock in Southern California who shoots what looks like a vermilion rockfish has a real chance of holding a sunset, and no way to tell. The rule already accounts for that by counting them together, so the correct behavior is simply to count every orange-red rockfish of this type against the same 2-fish limit and not try to sort them. Anyone who believes they can separate the 2 by eye is mistaken, and the stock assessment says so directly: confirmation requires genetic analysis.

Find difficulty is rated at the maximum here for a reason that is not about camouflage. The fish is not hiding. It is below where a diver goes, and on the rare occasion it is not, it cannot be knowingly identified. That is as hard as finding a species gets.

The shot, if it happens, is a deep-rock shot at a fish that behaves like a vermilion rockfish, which means a mid-length to longer gun, 100 to 130 centimeters, and a spine or head shot so a hit fish does not rock itself back under a ledge at depth. There is no spearfishing literature for the species and no California angling record, because records are kept under the vermilion name.

Deep Dive

For most of the 20th century this fish did not exist as far as anyone knew. It was a vermilion rockfish that happened to live deeper. In 2007 John Hyde examined 7 mitochondrial and 2 nuclear genes across the subgenus and found evidence for 3 species where the books listed fewer, and in 2008 Hyde and colleagues formally described the sunset rockfish, using 9 microsatellite markers and resting the case on a clean depth separation between the adult populations of the 2 forms.

What makes this a genuinely good example of cryptic speciation is the mechanism. These are not 2 populations that drifted apart across a coastline. They drifted apart down a water column. Depth is a real barrier in the ocean, and rockfish are unusually prone to splitting along it: the same thing produced rougheye and blackspotted rockfish, and blue and deacon rockfish. Adaptation to different pressure, temperature, oxygen and light leads to differences in when and where fish spawn, and spawning differences are how reproductive isolation gets built. The vermilion and the sunset are the same animal separated by about 100 meters of seawater.

The separation is not perfectly clean, and the untidiness is instructive. There is a one-way flow of mitochondrial DNA from vermilion into sunset, which means a substantial share of sunset rockfish carry vermilion mitochondria. Between 20 and 30 percent of fish with a vermilion mitochondrial signature turn out to be sunset when their nuclear genome is read. Early research that used mitochondrial markers alone therefore misidentified a chunk of the population, and had to be redone with nuclear markers. When researchers compared those introgressed fish against pure sunset on size, weight, depth and location, they found no differences at all, so the introgressed fish get pooled with sunset. They differ from vermilion. They do not differ from each other.

There is a serious management argument buried in this, and it is the strongest case that treating the 2 fish as one number has real costs. California and the federal council spent 2 decades building depth-based closures: the Cowcod Conservation Areas, covering 11,138 square kilometers and shutting groundfish fishing below about 120 feet, and the Rockfish Conservation Area, restricting fishing below 180 to 390 feet depending on season. Those closures were designed for other species. What they did incidentally was protect the deeper fish of this pair, the sunset, while pushing fishing effort into the shallower water where vermilion live. The researchers who documented this warned that vermilion rockfish may be taking a heavier hit than the shared numbers show, because a more abundant sunset population sits in the same total and hides it.

That is the answer to the obvious question of why anyone should care about a species nobody can identify. A combined number can be stable while one of its halves is being fished down. The 2021 assessment's 43 percent figure is a real measurement of something, but that something is 2 species averaged together, one of which is preferentially protected by area closures and one of which is preferentially exposed.

The remaining honest gap is large. There is no species-specific figure on this page for maximum age, size or age at maturity, birth timing, or fecundity, and that is deliberate rather than an oversight. Every published number of that kind was either measured before 2008 or measured on fish that were never genetically checked, which means it describes some unknown mixture of 2 species. A project to genotype roughly 25,000 archived tissue specimens from West Coast surveys was underway when the 2021 assessment was written, specifically to fill those blanks. Until that work is read, the correct thing for an encyclopedia to say about the life history of the sunset rockfish is that it is being measured now.
