The bronzespotted rockfish is the least-known fish on the CDFW groundfish identification chart, and California treats it accordingly. It may not be taken or possessed in the state at any time, zero fish per person, all year, at every depth. That prohibition binds spear divers the same as anglers, and it puts this species in the smallest category on the chart: 1 of only 4 rockfish, with cowcod, quillback and yelloweye, that cannot be kept at all.
The prohibition is not backed by a published stock assessment, because there is not one. What supports it is the shape of the fish's biology and the small size of its range. FishBase rates the bronzespotted rockfish very low resilience, with a population that would need more than 14 years to double and a vulnerability to fishing of 68 out of 100. It reaches 28 inches, matures slowly, and is reported to live at least 50 years, though no primary source giving a maximum age could be found. The whole range runs from central California to northern Baja, which means California waters hold most of the species that exists.
The reference accounts that do describe it say plainly that it is poorly studied and that very little is known about how it lives. Everything below reflects that.

Bronzespotted rockfish live from Monterey Bay south to northern Baja California, in caves and well-protected high-relief rocky outcrops, between 246 feet and somewhere between 1,230 and 1,355 feet depending on which account is read. There is no shallow stage that brings them into diving range. Nothing has been published about territoriality, home range, movement, schooling, or when in the day they are active, and this entry does not fill those gaps.
The fish is worth being able to identify precisely because it is illegal to keep. The body is mainly red, with faint dusky streaks over the back, bronze spots scattered across the back and upper flanks, and 3 bronze lines radiating back from the eye. Those bronze spots on red are the name and the field mark. On the identification chart the species sits beside cowcod, yelloweye and bocaccio, and the practical stakes of telling them apart are high, because 2 of those 4 fish carry a zero bag limit.
It reaches 28 inches and about 11 pounds, which puts it among the larger rockfish, and it bears live young as every rockfish does. Beyond that the record is empty. Its trophic level places it as a predator on fish and larger invertebrates, but no stomach-content study exists, so this entry does not list what it eats.
Deep Dive
Carl Eigenmann described the bronzespotted rockfish in 1891, and the fish has attracted less scientific attention in the 135 years since than almost any other rockfish of comparable size on the California coast. That absence is the story, and it is worth being explicit about what is missing rather than writing around it.
Not established for this species: its maximum age from a primary source, the size or age at which it matures, when in the year it gives birth, how many young a female carries, what it eats, what eats it, whether it holds territory, how far it moves, or how many there are. There has never been a stock assessment. The species is not the subject of a fishery, a monitoring program, or a research line.
What is established is small and physical: how big it gets, roughly what it weighs, where along the coast it occurs, what depths it holds, what habitat it uses, what it looks like, and that it bears live young.
That is a strange evidentiary basis for a total retention prohibition, and it is worth understanding why the rule exists anyway. Fishery management on the West Coast operates under a precautionary standard: where a species is long-lived, slow to mature, geographically restricted, and unassessed, the absence of data is treated as a reason for caution rather than as a reason to allow take. The bronzespotted rockfish checks every one of those boxes. It has a narrow range, a low resilience score, a reported lifespan past 50 years, and no assessment at all. Closing it entirely costs almost nothing, because nobody was building a fishery on a rare fish that lives in caves at 400 feet, and it removes the risk of quietly depleting a population nobody is counting.
The comparison worth drawing is with the cowcod, which sits 2 squares away on the same chart. The cowcod was fished to 9 percent of its unfished biomass, closed, tracked through 3 decades of assessment, and declared rebuilt in 2019, and it is still closed to retention. The bronzespotted rockfish was closed without ever being counted. Both fish are protected. Only one of them has a number attached to why.
