Where the olive rockfish is common, it is very common, and where it is not, a diver can go a season without seeing one. The fish is abundant from about Cape Mendocino, California down to Santa Barbara and around the northern Channel Islands, and California's own status report describes it as uncommon off much of southern California and Baja California. That was not always true. Into the 1980s the olive rockfish was an important southern California sport fish, and then overfishing combined with poor juvenile survival during a shift in ocean conditions cut southern California party-boat catches by 83 percent between 1980 and 1996. Central California catches fell too, later in the decade. The species has never been assessed by the IUCN Red List, and the 2001 California status report recorded no stock assessment for it, which is still the ordinary situation for the shallow rockfish that trawl surveys do not sample well.

A straightforward fillet. The meat is firm enough to hold up across a range of preparations.

Location
Olive rockfish live from southern Oregon south to Islas San Benitos in central Baja California, over high-relief rocky reef and through kelp forest. Most of the population sits in the upper 100 feet. The species has been recorded from barely subtidal water down to 570 feet, but that deep record comes from a single trawled fish, and the water a diver hunts holds nearly all of them. Off Southern California they also gather in the midwater around the offshore oil platforms, which stand in open water and function as artificial reef.
The name a diver hears in the water tells more than the official one. Olive rockfish are called sugar bass, johnny bass, and Jonathan in southern California, and greenie in central California, because the fish is shaped like a bass and is constantly mistaken for one. It is slender and torpedo-shaped where most rockfish are deep-bodied, and it swims in open water. The way to separate an olive rockfish from a kelp bass is the gill cover: rockfish carry spines there and kelp bass do not. The other confusion is with the yellowtail rockfish, which has red-brown flecking across its scales that the olive rockfish lacks.
They school. Groups are small to moderate, and a few olive rockfish are often mixed into a school of blue rockfish over the same reef. Individual fish barely move. Tagging studies recorded a maximum movement of 20 miles, and acoustic tracking in central California found olive rockfish holding a home range of about a third of an acre year round, the smallest of any of the kelp-forest rockfish measured in that study. A fish seen on one visit is very likely the fish seen on the next.
Spearfishing Brief
The olive rockfish is a midwater target, and the technique is the same one that works on blue and kelp rockfish. A diver who descends without thrashing, lets the reef settle, and then hangs still in the water column will have the school drift back within range. Chasing does not work. The behavior behind that is documented rather than assumed: this is a fish with a home range of roughly a third of an acre, and it does not abandon its patch of reef because something is floating in it.
Finding them is the harder half, and the reason is geography rather than camouflage. In central California kelp and around the northern Channel Islands olive rockfish are a normal part of the count. From Santa Barbara south they thinned out badly through the 1980s and 1990s and never fully came back, so a Southern California diver may spend a lot of time over good structure without one. Where they are present, the place to look is the outer edge of the kelp and the lip of high-relief reef, in open water rather than down among the rocks. A school of blue rockfish is worth a second look, because olive rockfish mix into them.
The shot is straightforward once the fish is inside range. A spine or head shot keeps a wounded fish from rocking up into the reef where a diver cannot reach it, and since these fish suspend in open water there is usually no crevice close enough for one to reach anyway. A speargun in the 90 to 100 centimeter range covers the shot, and the extra length over a kelp gun is deliberate. Olive rockfish are faster and more skittish than the blue rockfish they school with, and they tend to hold at the outer edge of the kelp rather than inside it, so the shot is often taken from a little further out. Olive rockfish reach about 24 inches, and the California angling record is 7 pounds 4 ounces from Morro Bay in 2014. The species is also a long-standing rod-and-reel target from boats and piers, and the bag limits are written mainly against that fishery.
Community sourcing on this species is thinner than on blue rockfish. The approach above is well supported for midwater rockfish as a group, and one detailed California guide describes it for olive rockfish specifically, but there is less independent agreement behind it than for the more heavily hunted species on the same reef.
Deep Dive
The olive rockfish was described in 1890 by Carl and Rosa Eigenmann. It reaches about 24 inches, lives at least 25 years with reports out to 30, and follows the growth pattern common in the family: females grow larger, males reach their maximum length earlier. Off central California a few fish are mature at 10.6 to 11.2 inches and 3 years old, half are mature by 12.9 to 13.7 inches and 5 years, and all are mature by 15.2 inches and 8 years.
Reproduction happens once a year. Fertilization is internal, the female carries the developing young, and she releases live larvae between December and March with the peak in January. A single female produces between 30,000 and 490,000 eggs in a season. The larvae drift as plankton, and between April and September the young fish, then 1.2 to 1.6 inches long, settle onto kelp beds, surfgrass, oil platforms, and other structure in water as shallow as 10 feet. Through the day those young fish gather in the water column, sometimes alongside young blue and black rockfish. At night they drop to the bottom and shelter under algae or among rocks. Some are also found living under drifting mats of kelp out in open water.
Diet changes as the fish grows. Small juveniles eat drifting animals: copepods and cladocerans, both tiny crustaceans, along with gammarid amphipods, which are the small shrimp-like crustaceans that live in kelp and on rock, plus krill and fish larvae. Adults move up the food chain. They take juvenile rockfishes, squid, octopus, isopods, polychaete worms, and krill. That diet puts the olive rockfish near the top of the nearshore reef food web, higher than most of the rockfish it shares the reef with. Whether adults hunt at night is unsettled. Fish as small as 2.5 inches become more active after dark, and adults eat octopus often, which is a night-available prey, but the California status account stops short of calling the adults nocturnal, and so does this entry.
Predator records for this species are thin, which is worth saying plainly rather than filling in. The published account for the olive rockfish names larger fishes, seabirds, and possibly some marine mammals, and lists the fishery itself as the pressure that has actually been measured. That is a different situation from the better-studied rockfish on the same reef, whose predators have been observed directly.
There is one more thing the fish is known for, and it is competition rather than predation. Olive rockfish compete with kelp bass for both food and shelter, which is a strange arrangement for 2 fish that look so much alike and that anglers have confused with each other for a century.
On the plate the olive rockfish is good: firm white meat that holds together across pan-frying, grilling, baking, tacos, and fish and chips, and better eating than the blue rockfish it shares the kelp with. California law requires the skin to be left attached to any rockfish fillet at sea so the species can still be identified.
