Rock greenling are common fish in the wrong place. From the Bering Sea down through Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon, this is an ordinary shore fish, caught more often from rocks than from boats and familiar to anyone who fishes an exposed headland. The International Union for Conservation of Nature listed the species as Least Concern in 2019, and no state stock assessment for it surfaced in research.

California is where the story turns. Point Conception is the southern limit of the range, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife records the species as rare south of San Francisco. That leaves a fish that is ordinary across most of the North Pacific rim and effectively absent from the water most of this site covers. A diver working Southern California kelp will not meet one. A diver on the Mendocino coast or the Oregon shore may see several in an hour on the right rock.

The abundance rating on this page carries that split openly. Every other species here is rated from Southern California, because that is the coast the Ichthyopedia was built for. Rock greenling cannot be rated that way without the number becoming a lie, so the 3 is a northern figure and the note beside it says so.

Rock greenling live along the northeast Pacific from the Bering Sea and the Kuril Islands south to Point Conception, with a second arm of the range through Hokkaido, the northern Sea of Japan, and the Sea of Okhotsk. Within that span they hold to one specific kind of water: shallow rock on an exposed coast, in the surge, where waves break over boulders and drain back through the gaps between them. The fish sit among the rock and dart out to take food carried past. Tide pools hold them. So do jetties, subtidal algae beds, and the edges of kelp. FishBase records the species from the surface down to 1,955 feet, but that is the deep extreme of the recorded range; the usual depth is 33 to 49 feet, and the Oregon Coast Aquarium puts the working range at about 66 feet and shallower.

An adult reaches 24 inches and roughly 2 pounds, and can live 18 years. The body is brown or green with darker markings, and the sexes separate by color once a diver knows to look: males carry red or orange mottling, sometimes as large bright red blotches along the side, while females show blue or pale spots. Both have a blue interior to the mouth, red eyes, and a single fleshy tab called a cirrus standing above each eye, which on this species is conspicuously large. The surest identification is the count of lateral lines. Greenlings carry 5 of them running the length of each side, where the rockfishes sharing the same rock carry 1. Nothing else in that habitat looks like it once the count is made.

The diet reflects an animal that takes what the surge delivers rather than hunting anything in particular. Crabs, shrimps, amphipods, worms, snails, bivalves, brittle stars, octopuses, small fishes, and fish eggs all appear on the list, along with algae. Juveniles feed on zooplankton before moving onto the rock.

Washington is the loose end: no official state page reached during research names greenling with a limit of their own, so they fall inside the general bottomfish daily limit, which varies by Marine Area and should be checked for the area being fished. That gap is recorded rather than guessed at.

Deep Dive

The raw flesh of a rock greenling is blue, sometimes a startling blue-green, and it looks like something has gone badly wrong with the fish. Nothing has. The color comes from biliverdin, a green bile pigment the animal produces in quantity, and it is harmless. The fillets turn white in the pan and taste of nothing unusual. 2 species already in this Ichthyopedia do the same thing: about 1 lingcod in 5 carries it, and cabezon carry it often enough that the trait is part of how the fish is described. Among the 3, rock greenling is the one most reliably blue.

The nesting behavior is the other thing worth knowing, because it explains where the fish is and when. Females lay sticky eggs in about 3 batches over a season, somewhere between 5,800 and 103,000 of them in total, and a parent stays with the nest until the larvae hatch about a month later at roughly 0.4 inches long. Guarding is the family signature. Kelp greenling males do it too, holding a nest site and driving off rivals through the spawn. The sources disagree on when: the Oregon Coast Aquarium puts the spawn from June through September with eggs laid on algae, while an angling reference has females moving inshore from January through March to lay in rock crevices swept by strong current. Both accounts agree on the guarding. Neither has been reconciled, and this page carries the summer window because it comes from the more institutional source, with the disagreement named rather than smoothed over.

What ties the two facts together is the surge. A fish that anchors its eggs in the shallowest, roughest water on the coast needs adhesive eggs and a guard to keep them, because that water is where the food arrives and where almost nothing else can hold position long enough to compete. Lateral lines read pressure and water movement, and an animal that lives inside breaking waves has more use for them than a rockfish hanging in the calm below.

For a Southern California diver, none of this is reachable, and that is the honest summary. Rock greenling belong to the cold, exposed, kelp-fringed rock of the north. They appear here because the site now covers Oregon and Washington, and because a fish that stops dead at Point Conception is a useful reminder that the line runs both ways: as many species end there coming south as end there going north.
